Lies in Lyrics
Deception is very vividly described in the song lyrics, it's given numerous figurative names and is metaphorized in many various very interesting ways there. Of course, we doubt that there are songs about lies and politics or lies and crime, most of the song lyrics are concentrated on lies in a relationship. No wonder, because most of the songs we listen to are about love, its possible styles and manifestations.
Certainly, most of the lyrics about deception are dedicated to liars and pretenders. Some songs are relatively optimistic (e.g. Madonna's 'Pretender' or 'Beautiful Liar' by Shakira feat. Beyonce), others are achingly sad (Damien Rice 'Don't Explain'), or even totally desperate (the well-known song by Jessica Simpson 'When You Told Me You Loved Me'). However, there are songs which are sung on behalf of the liars – the so-called frank confessions of the repentant: 'Said I Loved You but I Lied' (whopping one by Michael Bolton!) or 'I Lied' by Dave Hollister.
There are songs about lies with the title that shows it, there are the ones where the title is much more indirect: 'Prague' (Damien Rice), 'Careless Whisper' (George Michael), 'Irreplaceable' (Beyonce) etc.
There are even lyrics the authors of which demand their loved ones to fool them and to lies to them, fancy that! Just think of a not too brand new song by the Cardigans: 'Love me love me say that you love me, fool me fool me go on and fool me' or, for instance, the song by Fleetwood Mac called 'Little Lies' which says: 'Tell me sweet little lies'. As you can see so many songs, so many poetic representations of deception...
